Evan Greenberg, vice chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on US-China Relations, a member of the Advisory Board of Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM), chairman and CEO of Chubb Limited/Chubb Group, engaged with more than 100 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students at Tsinghua SEM on September 23, 2024. Focusing on the theme of "Insights on Global Challenges and Financial Industry's Future in the Context of Sino-US Relations," Greenberg engaged in a discussion with FENG Runhuan, chair professor of the Department of Finance. They shared thoughts and exchanged ideas with the students.

FENG and Greenberg explored the current state of Sino-US relations and their impact on business, the impact of generative AI on the financial sector, and the role of insurance companies in managing the large-scale risks posed by climate change. Greenberg emphasized that, despite competition between China and the United States, their economies are deeply interconnected. Stable bilateral relations are essential for business development, yet ongoing tensions between the two countries threaten enterprises on both sides. On the topic of generative AI, he acknowledged its transformative potential in the financial industry but noted it is still in its initial stages, requiring time for adaptation and optimization. He also highlighted the importance of establishing governance standards and peer review mechanisms to address the risks associated with AI, some of which he said are insurable. For students entering the financial industry, Greenberg advised focusing on developing expertise in a specific area or technology rather than rushing to leadership roles. He also shared examples of how Chubb Group is actively promoting insurance solutions for climate-related technologies, helping to support the transition to sustainable energy. Greenberg underscored the dual role of insurance companies: beyond providing compensation, they also play a critical part in enhancing societal resilience through data and risk management, especially in addressing the risks posed by climate change.
